MY Story
About me
My name is Beytullah Cengiz and I was born on 29 June 1988 in Heusden-Zolder(Belgium). I graduated in 2011 at University KHLIM with a professional bachelor degree in ICT. I was always busy with IT technology but felt like I couldn't express my artistic side with this. So 3 years ago I started with photography and soon it became my passion…
My interest in photography didn't happen overnight. I was always amazed by the great pictures I came across on the internet. And soon looking for those great pictures became all I did
So I decided to buy my own camera and began to save money. After a good summer vacation I still had some money left and bought my first DSLR camera: Nikon D80.
After buying my Nikon I started reading photography books and magazines, searching the internet, … I learned a lot, but it still wasn't enough for me. So joined a photography club. Here I met several friends with the same interest as me. We teach each other and improve our skills this way... I'm still a member of this club.
In November 2010 there was the "Istanbul Express" festival in Gent (Belgium). This festival was held in honor of the European Capital of Culture of 2010. They organized concerts, exhibitions,... and also a big photo contest. Obviously the concept of the photo contest was 'Istanbul'.
During my last trip to Istanbul I had taken some cool pictures of the city and so I decided to send in my favorite photo. My intention was to see if the picture could get the jury's attention and review. After a few weeks I got an E-mail from the organizers saying that I was invited to the Award night. More than 120 photographers had participated in the contest and out of all those pictures my photo got first place!! It was truly the happiest day of my life. I got so much public attention, but meanwhile I'm actually still the same modest Beytullah.
Of course winning this contest doesn't mean I'm the best photographer or that I don't need to improve anymore. No! On the contrary, I keep working on how to improve my vision and skills…
